Description

This boulder is loads of fun. Although it is pretty obscure compared to all of the other boulders in the SLS Area, it is still easily accessible. Cold Boulder is a large boulder with a steep, mostly blank roof, and an almost equally blank face, making the problems here very singular and enticing. All of the Cold problems are recommended, and Surge is fantastic!

Getting There

Walk past the overlook and onto the trail. pass the Overlook Area which spans down past The Hive Boulder and the tiny Foggy Mountain Fin. After the Fin, your basically out of the Overlook Area.

After Overlook, you will walk around a very tight left turn in the trail (30 seconds past the fin) and now you are in the SLS Area.

After the sharp turn, the next feature you will see is MOW, which is a massive double-decker boulder which looks like a huge mouth (use youre imagination... its a large patio boulder with an even larger, steeply inclined roof boulder on top of the patio).

Directly past MOW is another steep boulder which is Alcatraz. The very top nose of Alcatraz is touching the back of MOW. The steep dark overhanging face is where the Escape problems are located.

Stay on the trail as it turns right and the large boulder beside the trail is the Mike-N-Ike Boulder.

Past Mike and left more will be the Pit Boulder, and the the massive roof beyond this is SLS.

Pass SLS and look left off of the trail. you will see a very small portion of rock sticking up off of the hillside (pretty obscure). Walk down to it and youre at the Cold Boulder.

On the Cold Boulder Such a cool "crack climb"! Walk down to the SLS boulder and 50 yards below it on the trail cut left and start down the hill through the woods. Look for the long boulder with the protruding roof along its side. Walk downhill along the boulder and at the bottom portion of the boulder you will find a long enticing crack under the low roof. This is the "Surge" problem. Sit start in the massive in-cut jug portion of the crack in the back of the roof and use interesting hand-foot m...[more]   Browse More Classics in Virginia
