Description

Coal Creek Canyon (CO Hwy 72) is mostly private property but is host to at least one great crag at the top of the canyon that will be worth the drive.

Eds. There are various crags like Wonderland, Pinecliffe (perhaps now closed?), Forsythe Rock, Twin Sisters' three crags, The Shaft, Blue Mountain (most, if not all, on private land), and The Scoop/Echo Canyon. There are plenty of additional chunks of rock that may require careful map inspection to find legal access.

Getting There

Drive South from Boulder 10 miles or north from Golden on CO Hwy 93, and go west on CO Hwy 72.

The Middle Way 5.4 4a 12 IV 10 VD 3c  Colorado : Coal Creek Canyon : Sister Slab
This is a pleasant 2-pitch climb up grooves and cracks, over flakes and bulges, and up the otherwise-smooth and generally low-angle central portion of Sister Slab. The route has the feel of a Flatiron route, but for the granite and quiet view of the continental divide. The climb can be made more or less difficult depending on your route choice. Staying in the grooves and cracks, there are plenty of handholds, footholds, and places for protection. Move a little to the left or right, and you have m...[more]   Browse More Classics in Colorado
