Clark Canyon brush fire Eastside Sierra

This afternoon a brush fire started pretty close to the main parking for Clark Canyon. Seems like it's still going as of 6:45pm, with a white cloud visible from rt 395 with some yellow-orange tinge in its low core.

Sharon and were climbing, and there had been a few raindrops and we'd heard some thunder. Then a while later (I guess after 2:00pm) I looked around and noticed that some of the low clouds were yellow-orange instead of gray. So we retrieved our draws and pulled down the rope as fast as we could, packed up and jogged down to the parking -- warned another party we saw still climbing.

The flames were not much more than 100 yards from the road as we were driving out. We soon met the first truck of firefighters coming in. They asked if other people were still there, and we told them we heard the other party say they were getting out quick. They asked if we knew how it started, and I said seemed like it must have been lightning.

Then we drove the rest of the way out to rt 395, saw other firefighter vehicles going in.

As of this morning, 200 acres and still burning: inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4…

Glad you made it out! Looks like the fire took over Clark's and is continuing to burn more.

That's terrible news. I see the latest update is 2,300 acres and 10% contained. The burn map does not bode well for the crags. Very upsetting!

Does anyone have an update on this? As far as I can tell the fire is out but I'm not sure if any of the climbs are affected.
Thanks.

Pick up the thread at message #81 for images. Not as bad as I had originally thought.

Some friends recently backpacked out of that area, and report that the fire wasn't bad and the climbing area unaffected.

The rock is mostly unaffected, but the flora is toast:

Looking uphill from Clark Canyon parking.

Clark Canyon parking pano.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
