Here is the sweet old Dodge left in the meadow. T...

This is one of the areas on the "other side". If you've made the hike out to Mecca or The Temple you are familiar with the more involved approach to get out to these crags. The hike to the City of Gold takes it one step further as the hike is longer and the "trail" is much less developed at this point in time. Those willing to brave the seemingly endless slog up the hill will be rewarded with some amazing climbing. If you can find your way to the crag you are very unlikely to see other folks.

Getting There

The "trail" begins roughly one mile down the Old Road diving from the top down. You will find some small pullouts on the left or right just beyond a driveway leading to a private cabin and near a spring (see photo). Use the map (see photo) and be prepared to hike for an hour plus, especially if it is your first time out there. In addition to making use of the map I can also say that after going there several times this summer we never found the first part of the trail. We found it most useful to head straight up the hill staying out of the trees and keeping the cabin within view on our left. We were then able to crest a small hill where we found the old dodge car (photo) and the most well worn portions of the trail. Follow the flagging and many cairns. This hike takes a solid 50-60 minutes.

My wife and I road tripped all summer this year. The City of Gold was high on my list as a place to find and visit. After our first day climbing in Tensleep this year we arrived back at our truck to find a City of Gold map and topo under our windshield wiper. What Luck?!! The hike is a little rough. We tried to dress or improve the trail where we could, hopefully making it a little easier to get to the cliff.
