The River Wall, carved out by the mighty Rio Manat...

This 250' cliff is obvious nearby the historic bridge at Mata de Platano on the north side of the city of Ciales and the very visible large white rock a half mile to the north of Caliche Crag. Shady until 3pm in the afternoon, this is the most outrageous crag yet developed on the island with big, steep lines that will leave you pumped and anaerobic. The wall is steep enough with roofs on top that the rock does not get wet in the biggest storms. In the shade with breezes and temps year-round in the 80'sF, this area is good to climb on every day of the year, there is no "off-season".

Getting There

The bridge is still under (re)construction and so park between the Chinchorro (bar/restaurant) and the bridge, find the path down to the river opposite the car park, cross the river (usually knee to waist deep) and walk upstream for 60m to reach the trail through the sugar cane to the base of the wall. Total driving town from Ciales city is two minutes and approach time about 10-15 minutes in a few hundred yards.

There are currently three routes to the right of the large stalactite and this is the center of these and it starts a slightly higher ledge above the main ledge where the adjacent routes have anchors. The first pitch starts up an easy slab then at a big ledge, follows steep pockets past four bolts to a tricky mantle. Continue straight up somewhat loose rock past four more bolts and two large ledges to reach the higher ledge with an anchor....[more]   Browse More Classics in International

The automated charts on this page that show temperatures and ideal months for climbing are far from accurate. Rain fall in Ciales is a minimal factor for climbing, typically a late afternoon thunder shower that last for 30 minutes and rarely affects the climbing plans. Temperatures are about 5-10 degrees warmer than listed as well but if you climb in the shade, it's rarely an issue due to Caribbean breezes. Overall this area is good to go for rock climbing year-round and always "in-season".
