BETA PHOTO: A great hunk of rock!

Description

A very impressive hunk of rock seen from miles distant. It has many options to gain the summit but getting there will be a walk of 40 min.s or so.

Getting There

Following the directions for the "Area", try and park as close to the corral as possible. Hike east a short distance to the first wash and take it north to the very apparent monolith. You will see a trail heading up a dune to the mesa edge that gains the rocks base (OR) drive to the end of the road and a turn around where you park. Then enter through the stile and follow the cattle trail north until you see a "good" way up NE toward the "Chimney". This is the best option but will take some recon.

Pitch I: Ninety feet. The first pitch has its crux at the beginning of the obvious finger crack halfway up. There were death blocks above that I did not want to be desperately flailing on as I was sure the lower crack would be pumpy. So I aided. Goes about 5.7 C1 and you will want #1s X 4 and #2s X2 for this crack section. Later we cleaned these and the crack goes clean, albeit pumpy and sustained in sandstone, at about 10-. Hand size matters! Most of this is BD # 1 size. Fat fingers are a ...[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah
