Hi MP,

looking for any information I can gather on climbing in Catoctin. I know its only be open (or reopened) a little over a month but im trying to gather anything I can get to make a trip down there. if anyone knows of any guidebooks or maps or anything or climbing groups it would be greatly appreciated.

also I posted in general climbing because I couldn't figure out which region this should be posted to, Maryland isn't in eastern or southern states.

I live about an hour east of Fredrick, northeast suburb of Baltimore. I haven't climbed there. I have climbed at Harper's Ferry where the bouldering is pretty good. Annapolis Rocks or Rocks State Park too.

I would say the closest good bouldering spot is all the way at Cooper's Rock. The thing is another hour and you'll be in the Gunks.

I live in Frederick and just visited hog rock today. There seems to be one main Boulder in this area with only a few climbs on it. A traverse from each side with optional top out distances about V1 or 2, a V2 up the center starting on a high rail and using a left sloper and smear to reach to the jug haul top out I've dubbed thumper. There are also 2 harder problems I can't do maybe V6?

There is also a large area called charcoal exhibit I plan to visit this weekend, it's just past the ranger station off rt.77. Take park center rd and the 4th parking lot for hog rock. There is a trail across the road. A little before hog rock parking there is a massive rock face and my friend said there is more behind that. Hope it's good.

I've been exploring Catoctin Mountain Park and adding to the MP page in recent weeks. Please let me know if anyone is open to exploring, climbing, and developing some areas this winter. There are some pretty sweet opportunities for hard and moderate boulder problems.

There's some stuff along the north side of Big Hunting Creek as soon as you enter the park along Rte 77.

Gateway boulders

you can park along 77 just about opposite the boulders and easily rock hop across hunting creek.

There are also crags south of the creek, upslope into Cunningham Falls SP. Now that the leaves are gone, I've seen some faces broken by huge crack systems. Definitely more to explore and climb!

I will include this parking info in the area beta for the MP page.
