Great ice climbing north of Anchorage. From long easy solos, to harder test pieces, this is a good place to spend a day or longer. Temps are often colder here than in other places. Expect cold temps in the canyon as well as bitter wind.

Getting There

Caribou Creek is two hours north from Anchorage on the Glenn Highway. After the Mat glacier, the road drops into the caribou drainage. Cross the Caribou Creek bridge, park along the road. Hike down to the river on the north side of the road until one can gain access to the creek. Access to most of these climbs is limited until the river freezes. Skis, snowshoes or a snowmachine are helpful.

Kid's Corner WI3  Alaska : Anchorage & South Central I... : Caribou Creek
This is a fun ice route, and a good beginner multipitch route, (big ledges and such). Climb the relatively short pillars and curtains, as well as some very short steps of steeper ice as you follow the climb towards a top out. You can walk back to the road from the top, or rap the route if you're headed further upstream.Pitch 1: WI3. Pitch one climbs a short pillar ~35 or 40ft. This pitch can be steep and hooked out and dinner platey. Belay off a bolted anchor on climbers left. Step 1: 5ft Step 2...[more]   Browse More Classics in Alaska
