Car 06 carabiner

My brother in law died recently. He had a heart attack followed by both lower legs getting amputated then his right arm. My sister in law had to use hoists to get him out if bed and into his wheel chair, and out if the chair into the car. She had two CAR 1016 locking carabineers and since she no longer needed them she gave them to me since I'm the only one e she knows crazy enough to rappel. All my other binders have ratings on them, these do not. She said they were rated for 5000 lbs. I've Googled them and can't find anything about them. Do you think they would be safe to rappel with?

You can buy 2 carbines that you know are safe for rappelling with $10.

Maybe, maybe not. You will probably get a 50-50 response with some saying yeah go for it, others saying dont do it.

Personally, I would NOT use them. Without a rating you just cant know. Imagine yourself at a rappell belay, butt hanging out 200 feet above the ground. And imagine lowering yourself and looking up at your carabiners, not completely sure that they are good...scary thought in my opinion.

And I agree with Tom, is your life really worth a 10$ savings?

Really odd to not see a rating on them. I would just go spend 20$ and get a legit one. Is your life worth risking 20$?

Looks like an omega pacific tactical carabiner. Hard to say.

I'm always amazed at the risks people will take to save $20.

Thanks for all the replies. That is kinda of what I was thinking. Better safe than sorry. I was hoping that someone would recognize them and give a two thumbs up. I really have enough binders that I don't have to use them.

I have seen biners that almost completely looked like climbing biners, but didn't have any markings on them. I think this is because they were never marketed toward some non-climbing application. They may well be strong enough, you don't know.

The places I've seen stuff like this is in healthcare settings and gyms, both to aid in various lifting activities. I suspect that these were made more than strong enough but didn't carry the mark because they were sold for "allied medical" or something, even if they were made on the same line as our climbing gear. It's probably not worth finding out the hard way though.

Another thing to consider, your interest is in rappelling. These are a lousy shape for that. Go buy a couple of big pear shaped lockers at $13 each. You'll be much happier with that.

I've got some steel carabineers ERS for rappelling. Weight isn't an issue and they last longer than aluminum.

Be it that its a locker, if its solid steel or aluminum, then I'm certain its ok for a rappelling situation, but why would you?
