Butterfly Lake Rock Climbing
BETA PHOTO: Red-Briefcase, Green-Dirty Secrets, Blue-Humble Pi...
This area has a small cliff band, with short routes. There are 6 routes here that are in Uinta Rock, with lots of possibilities for further development. The rock is not the greatest, but not the worst either, and surprisingly quiet for being so close to the road and a campground.
According to the guidebook, you park at the small parking area at Butterfly Lake, then stay to the right side of the lake until you are across from where you are parked. Then go into a grove of trees and out into another meadow with a small pond. Above you will find a short, steep buttress.
We were at the campground, where you can see the climbs from most of the campsites. We just went from there around the west end of the lake and up through the meadows right to the taulus and the wall.
Either way, it's a 10 minute approach.

A steep face climb, starting with thin crimps to a big horizontal crack, this is where you find the crux, moving from there up through some thin and fun moves (I used a heel hook at one point) until your feet are in the next big horizontal crack. From there just fun face climbing to the anchors. There is a very hollow flake like section about 3/4 way up, but it feels solid and has been there for years....[more] Browse More Classics in UT
