Description

As of May 1, 2016, the Breaks Interstate Park (aka "the Breaks") became officially open to rock climbing. As a new climbing area, there are not many routes currently established, but the opportunities are vast. The areas currently open to climbing and new development are Pinnacle Rock, the Stateline Overlook, the Notches, all along Prospector Trail (1.5 miles), the Pavilion, and Grey Wall. See the climbing and development regulations in the photo. The sandstone at the Breaks is similar to that of the New River Gorge and the Obed.

With river access near the Pavilion and cliff jumping and some deep water soloing at nearby Pool Point, the Breaks makes a great summer climbing destination. The routes are also shaded by their orientation and the surrounding mature forest. During the fall, climbs will offer exposure to the deepest gorge east of the Mississippi. The Breaks offers many amenities and other activities such as lodging, camping, a restaurant, mountain biking trails, fishing, white water rafting, a water park and more. Visit breakspark.com/ to learn more.

Be sure to stop in the Rhododendron Lodge or the Visitor's Center to fill out a waiver before climbing. They are looking at moving to an online system in the future.

NEW ROUTE DEVELOPMENT: Route development is currently permitted at the Stateline Overlook, the Notches, Pinnacle Rock, The Pavilion, Grey Wall, and all along Prospector Trail (1.5 miles). See "Development Regulations" in the photos for guidelines. As of 9.19.16, the new development form is no longer required. Instead of submitting the form, developers must post the route on Mountain Project within one week of development, even if it is not complete. Please keep the route description updated with completion status.

Excited about this area. Thanks for those who worked hard to get it open! Here is a map that has been re-created, with permission, based on the original Gus Glitch topo. He and Koma were some of the first climbers here in 1992. Find the map here: grounduppublishing.com/?p=1081
