So my girl just got herself her first pair of shoes at wilderness exchange. They are the most awesome off white with a purple tongue, board lasted, lined, mythos. Brand new, on sale for 50$. Clearly they havnt been made in a while, anyone happen to know just how old these things are?

awesome mythos

Those aren't the Mythos. I think they are called Syncros. Maybe from the mid to late '90's.

Syncros, not Mythos. The low-top version of the Kaukulator. My favorite shoe ever, got 8 or more resoles out of my two pairs.

Stopped making them around 2000 or so?

Yeah those were just about my favorites ever too. FYI they are slip lasted, not board lasted. Very stiff slip lasted, but still slip lasted.

Wish they still made those shoes awesome awesome shoe... What would be the closest thing to these now. Katana's, Muira's???

muiras? not even close. I mean seriously, they are mythos without the lace around the back of the heel deal, the lining, the stiffness and the color.

my girlfriend was rocking these shoes for years and years, and when we went to replace them, she chose the Sportiva Tradmaster, which she felt fit her feet about the same. She says that they are not as stiff, but what do girls know about stiffness...of shoes.

Yes and no, Phill T. You're right that these shoes are eons away from the Muira, but there are some pretty significant differences between the Mythos and the Syncro too. Take a look at the toe profile, for example. As far as shoes like it in Sportiva's current line-up, they made a shoe called the Focus a few years back that was VERY similar. These days, the Trad Master, with its blunt tow, stiff midsole, and neutral shape, is probably the closest thing. I actually think it's the same last, in fact.

If you can find them, the Kermits by climbingshoes.com were a virtual clone of the Synchro.

I've been in Sportivas so long that I've got their logo imbedded in my heel.

Right now I think the closest shoe, performance-wise to the Synchro is probably the TC Pro. I've got two pair of Synchros that I wear on a rotational basis for really thin edges. They have had three resoles each and are softer and more comfortable than when new but they still perform great. I've also got Katanas and Miuras. BUt when I need to put rubber to really thin edges and don't use the Synchros ('cause I want them to last forever) I bring out the TC Pros and they work the best. Now granted, the shape of my feet are pretty bad, so my fit might be different from other climbers, BUT I'm just saying that I think the TC Pros are the best substitute for the Synchro.

Just for knowledge, almost all shoes are now slip lasted. A slip lasted shoe has a mid-sole, or not in very rare cases added after the "sewn sock" is put onto a last to give it shape. How stiff the shoe is depends on what that mid-sole is made of and how thick it is. If you used a piece of 3mm steel you would have a very stiff and uncomfortable shoe. Most mid-soles are in the 1-2or3 mm range and made of some sort of plastic or fiber.

A board lasted shoe starts with a sole and has uppers sewn to it. They are just different construction methods and do not dictate stiffness, though I would think that slip lasting gives one more flexibility and generally a better fit, I mean who has a completely flat sole to their foot?
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
