Description

Supposedly the Blair Witch movie was filmed in the woods near these rocks.

The bouldering is on a short exposed cliff band and a boulder or two. My recommendation is to climb everything at the Harpers Ferry gorge before going to this area. Having climbed at Harpers Ferry since 1996 I began to run out of new rock to keep me psyched. Unless you are in a similar situation I would stay at the gorge.

There is one really classic problem here. It’s called the “Blair Witch”. There are some other good problems too but they haven't been well documented. If you were a V6 climber you could climb all of the decent lines in one visit.

There are kind of two areas. The two areas with climbable rock are separated by maybe 150 yards of woods where the cliff is just jumbled blocks. They are both along the AT so it isn't hard to find. Just look east into the woods. It's all about 100 yds from the trail.

Getting There

The climbing is about 100 feet east of the the Appalachian Trail south of Gapland State Park. It takes about 15 minutes of easy hiking from the parking lot to reach this small area. Since the hike is along the mountain top there is very little elevation change.

The Blair Witch V4-5 6B+  Maryland : Blair Witch Area
You start low in the overhang on crimps, move to a cool flat sloping hold, move to the horizontals, climb right a bit until you are able to work up the rest of the overhang. Don't peel around all the way right or you'll miss the full length finish to the point....[more]   Browse More Classics in Maryland
