Black Rock is an exposed ledge on the edge of the Squannacook River in Townsend. It has some solid rock, but it definitely has some sandy holds and flaky stuff that just gives it character. It's a great place to climb, and there is a lot to play around with on there. A group of friends and I have tried to keep other climbers away, because it is a almost backyard boulder spot, but we are unsure of the grades and would like friendly climber traffic if anyone in the area is actually interested in it....

Getting There

There is a school set back from the library and the middle school. It is an elementary school called Squannacook Elementary. It isn't used anymore for classes, but the playground and parking lot are used a lot by people walking the fitness trails behind the school....

Park at the playground, and walk to the left of the farthest swings. There is a gate opening with no gate on it and a trail that goes back. You will see a trail on your right shortly after entering the woods. Don't take that right, but take the next right. Follow the small trail down a slight hill, and you will come to a fork. Go right, and follow the wide trail right.... Walk about 800 feet, then you will enter a clearing with what looks like a clearing. Walk down to where you can see the river. It will be on your left... then look right, and Black Rock will be right there. It can be seen from the top because of the exposed rock ... you can't miss it.

Starting sitting with one hand on a right sloper and a left on a decent jug, work your way up all of the best holds you can see. It is the most obvious line on the rock up a great juggy crack/flake.... I would definitely say it is harder than it looks from the ground. The crux comes at the end. You work up a great deal crack until you have to mantel up on some positive holds, but don't be fooled. The moves at the top are delicate and offer covered in pine needles. The landing is the worst p...[more]   Browse More Classics in Massachusetts
