Black Hawk Lake Rec area, just west of Gov. Dodge State Park is a mini version of just that. There is a campground, a lake to swim in and sandstone cliffs surrounding the property.

FYI, most of the rocks in this area are choss, but there are a few good zones for some bouldering potential located around the campground and other areas if you are one to explorer.

Note: This is NOT a state park. Please visit the park's website for further details such as how to purchase a park pass and other park rules.

Getting There

From Dodgeville, head west on US 18 to the town of Cobb. Take Hwy 80 north from Cobb, then a right on Cty. BH to enter the park.

Sit start far left under the roof on good crimps, go right and up. This is a rare Wisconsin floating sandstone boulder with a 60deg roof. The bottom side of the roof is a little chossy and should not be climbed if wet or damp. It sits in the shade so takes longer to dry out than the other climbs in the area....[more]   Browse More Classics in Wisconsin

Tradoholic. I wish I could turn back the clock and actually went out with you back then. I have been doing a bit of exploring this last year. I am super stoked to get out there and not look at the same old piece of rocks weekend after weekend. You are one of the guys I draw inspiration from.

Thank you, I am a very inspirational person. Did you know I also fathered the modern bouldering scene at DL with my explorations?!?! You could be the next me!

I have spent over a year searching and developing problems at BH which I'll start posting. Please note that there is private property that surrounds this area and so DO NOT trespass. I have been working with local land owners to gain access to some very good looking rock nearby and have recently had success, so please don't F&*k this up!

Also being a rec park there's lot of hunting so definitely wear orange during hunting season...I had a close call so I say this from personal experience.

As to the private property issue. Most of the park boundary is well fenced and well marked NO Trespass (on the private property side) but not in all places so as Jason points out.... be VERY mindful.

Jason. I am wondering if you guys have worked problems on the big triangular shaped boulder yet. The one with the really small base size compared to the much larger upper mass. It looks like some really good problems on that?

That's a rare formation and the pedestal looks very fragile so I would not climb on it. In my opinion it's best just to look at it and appreciate it defying gravity :).
