Description

Bird Rock is a nice little backwater crag located on the western slopes of Thunder Butte proper. In some ways it is like Thunder Ridge’s little redheaded stepchild – not nearly as big and not quite as good. It does, however, have several standout routes, some quality bouldering, and unparalleled views of the South Platte and the Tarryall mountains. It is well worth a visit after you have ticked off all the Thunder Ridge classics! Bird Rock itself is located on National Forest land, but directly to the south is private property. Please be respectful of the fenced property boundary, and stay on public land.

Getting There

Bird Rock is located on the way to Thunder Ridge on the east side of 9-J Road. Drive down 9-J Road from Stump Road until you exit the live trees and get into the Hayman burn zone (approximately 3 miles). Bird Rock will be the very obvious outcrop directly to the East. Park here, and approach the cliff by basically walking straight to it by crossing Four Mile Creek and hiking/bushwhacking up the steep hill below the crag. Expect about a 30 minute hike to the west side routes, an additional 10 minutes for the east side routes.
