Big Meadows is a small, quiet area that can be pleasant in the summer. The rock is coarse basalt that looks worse than it really is. It is no destination crag, but if you live in the area, it is a nice spot.

Getting There

From South Fork, head West on US 160 for about 15-20 minutes looking for a Forest Service sign to Big Meadows on the right. If you hit the tunnel, you went a few hundred yards too far.

From Pagosa Springs, head East on US 160 for about 30-40 minutes. Just after you exit the tunnel at the bottom of the far side of Wolf Creek Pass, look for the Forest Service sign to Big Meadows on your left.

For both: from the turn, go about 1/4 mile to the bridge over the Rio Grande and park in the small pullout on the right. Both cliffs can be accessed from here. If the long wall is your only destination and the river is low, you can drive further up and park across from the wall in a pullout, wading the river.

This is a nice route for beginner trad climbers or for kids. There is a little bit of a crux about 2/3 height, and there are plenty of rests. This route is also a fun little mixed line in the winter, with the same name (M4)....[more]   Browse More Classics in Colorado

Just finally made it to Little Black Cliff on 7.16.17, and I really enjoyed this area. Definitely bring your helmet though as a belayer and climber. Since this area doesn't get too much traffic, there is lots of loose stuff but the friction is great!

On 7.15.17, I walked up to Long Cliff in the rain (just a few minutes upstream), and this wall looked like the jam! Lots of roofs and longer routes than Little Black. Once again, helmet is a must!

It will be nice when the area cleans up for safety reasons, but all of this nice, hardly touched basalt sure is great.
