Climbing in griffith park? On the north side of griffith park there is a view point known as bee rock. Below this, on the SSE side of the formation is a cliff that ranges between 40-90 feet tall. The rock is some sort of questionable sandstone/conglomerate mess, but there are some surprisingly solid sections, especially on the harder climbs. At the time of this posting there are 7 climbs from 10b-12b. It's a work in progress and there are still some loose holds (a helmet wouldn't be a bad idea) but feel free to go check it out. The ratings are just my guesses, so feel free to weight in.

It gets sun pretty much all day in the winter, so it's best on cooler or cloudy days. In the spring and early summer it starts to go into the shade between 3 and 4 allowing for several hours of shaded climbing.

Getting There

From Crystal Springs Dr, turn onto Griffith park Dr. It's either a left or a right depending on which side you're coming from, but it's a T stop so there's only on way to go. After about 1000 feet on griffith park drive there's a left turn into a parking area. The hike should take about 15 minutes. From the end of this parking lot hike up the road until there is a door in the fence on your right. Go through the door and go left on the dirt fire road on the other side. After about 50 yards take a right onto a small dirt trail the goes up a gully. Follow this trail around the left side of the rock formation above.

My favorite climb here. This is the tallest climb on the wall and thanks to a 12" glue in bolt it goes through the lightly overhanging rock at the top of the cliff. Start on the dirty slab and clip a bolt before getting to the actual climb. BETA ALERT: Follow a series of huecos to two small crimps and a dyno to a large hueco. Move up and left to a large square hold just before the crux bulge . Move quickly around the bulge through a series of crimps. Climb up easier ground for ...[more]   Browse More Classics in California

If your an LA resident and you can climb 5.11 get your ass up here. The approach is like 5 minutes its right in the middle of the city and has beautiful veiw. Especially in the evening when the sun is setting and the swollows are flying around. Theres are couple gems up there R.I.B is my favorite. @thedeveloper Great job and thanks for the hard work!!!

Some good lines in a beautiful setting. Rock quality is similar to Echo/ Malibu so bring a helmet, but the bolts are insanely bomber, the approach is short, and it's a short trip from downtown. Thanks JT for all your work.

Are these africanized bees like Stoney or regular bees?

Not sure, but I got them worked up pretty good a few weeks ago when I rapped in over their hive and I only got stung once

Climbed there today, we had much more fun than expected. The bees are for sure just regular docile bees, they are not killer bees. One guy got one sting today as we climbed passed the hive. Africanized bees would go crazy and sting over and over and over and chase you.
