The actual Barber Shop Traverse route.

Description

The route in the photo to the right is incorrect. See photo below.

This route traverses and ascends Mt. Toll on the West side. It spirals up and south around the entire west face. Hence the name the Barber Shop traverse. Traverse about 50-75 yards west of the base of the North Ridge route, and find an easy scramble (5.3 if dry) to a ledge system that traverses and ascends the mountain. Third class up and around this huge and obvious ledge about 400 feet to a steep drop off into a gully. Look for the weakness that will allow you to traverse into the gully (5.3). Cross the gully to the other side, and begin climbing up again. Do not go up the gully or you will end up in a loose choss-pile of a trench. The rock improves and another pitch sees you to the top of the ridge, about a 5 minute hike from the summit.

Location

See above.

Protection

Standard alpine rack. Large gear was convenient to have.

I did this back in 2009. It was a traverse, coming from the East Ridge of Audubon to the summit of Audubon, over to Paiute, and then toward Mt. Toll. We did this west face. Lots of loose scree, but keep going until you get to the second gully. My recollection was that we found a small cairn or two. Then once in the second gully, we went up the left side on some low class 5 rock. Easy enough to solo as my 10 year old son did it with us. Once you get to the ridge, you finish to the summit on the Class 2 east face.
