BETA PHOTO: Bandit Buttress East Side

Probably the most concentrated area of moderate sport climbs in the area. The buttress is sunny and quite hot in summer afternoons. The south facing rock face is quite pleasant for winter climbing with not a soul in sight. Snow usually melts off within a day or two after a storm. The rock is decent and clean.

Getting There

Park on the south side of the road in a large pullout area about a 1/2 mile west of the Woodford's store. A 20 minute hike up a fairly well worn trail will lead you to the base of the south toe of the buttress.

This is an enjoyable climb involving mostly crack on decent rock. Although this is usually climbed as a sports climb the FA was trad and can still be climbed as such. Bolts were placed to vastly improve rope management and to allow face climbing options right of the crack. Most people traverse right after 75' and head to the shared anchor on "The Prowler" rather than finish out on top to the chain anchors. This a great climb for beginners learning to lead....[more]   Browse More Classics in California
