Bouldering - Picnic Area

The Bald Rock climbing area is a collection of places in the lower elevation of the northern Sierra foothills, many with Bald Rock in the name.

Getting There

The Bald Rock areas are all approached on Bald Rock Road, naturally!

I am shamelessly recycling Crimper E6's detailed Bald Rock Dome directions up to the general area here.

From the all parts west:

This area is typically approached from the town of Oroville if you are coming from the west, from Redding, Chico or Sacramento.

From the junction of Highways 70 and 162 in Oroville (set odometer here), take 162 east through town, following it as it turns right about 1.7 miles from Highway 70.

Continue on 162 ("Olive Highway") around Lake Oroville where it becomes the Highway." Follow this to a signed intersection with Bald Rock Road at about 19.2 miles from Highway 70.

Follow Bald Rock Road as it winds through the hills.

The Picnic Area road is on a left turn driving from the west after 22.7 miles or so (26.6 miles from Highway 70).

For Bald Rock Dome, continue past this, and then pass the first of two intersections with Zink Road at 23.9 miles, 1.2 miles further down the road from the Picnic Area (27.8 from Highway 70), you will intersect Zink Road a second time (GPS: N39'39'36.2" W121 20'06.9").

Here, turn right unto the bumpy, dirt, Forest Service Road 21N51Y. This is also marked with a sign that says, "Dome Trail - 3 miles" Most passenger cars should be able to handle this dirt road (21 N51 Y), but after severe rains, or low snow, when it may become impassable. Follow this road for 2 miles (29.8 miles from Highway 70) to a parking area located on the right shoulder of the road (GPS N39'38'54.4", W121 °18'57.6"). This parking area is .4 miles past the pre-fabricated home perched on the granite slab on the left side of the road.

From the all parts east:

Here are notes if you drive in from Quincy or Reno.

From Quincy, drive west on the Quincy-Oroville Highway to Brush Creek. There, turn left on Bald Rock Road.

For Bald Rock Dome, turn left after 2.5 miles and follow the same directions from there.

For Bald Rock Picnic Area, continue another 1.2 miles (3.7 miles total from Brush Creek) and turn right into the dirt road to the parking area.

Trip Around the Sun 5.10+ 6b+ 21 VII+ 20 E3 5b PG13  California : Northeast California : ... : Bald Rock Dome
Modern ground up first ascent completed as a birthday celebration despite the 95 degree heat. Route takes a near plumb line between Fox Trot and Paradox up excellent quality rock. This route may be heady in places and requires some route finding up the dikes between widely spaced bolts, it's recommended being comfortable on runout 5.8 slab. There are hardly any supplemental gear placements, so leave the rack at home or suffer the weight penalty! This is a great rappel route to get to the...[more]   Browse More Classics in California
