A SJMG fell while guiding the skylight ice climb in SW Colorado, Tuesday. Injuries were such that flight for life was called in to bring injured guide to quick medical attention. Waiting for more details. James2

Ice climber falls
Submitted by Ouray County Pl... on Wed, 01/06/2016 - 5:11pm
An ice climber fell Tuesday while climbing a route called Skylight near Senator Gulch on County Road 361.
Dale Remsberg is a guide for San Juan Mountain Guides. According to Remsberg's Facebook page he got hit by something from above and fell 40 feet. He was airlifted to Montrose and is now in stable condition.
According to Junior Mattivi, Ouray County Sheriff, Remsberg was leading a group when he fell. He was tied in and still on the line, so the group was able to lower him to the ground.
"It was right alongside the road so it wasn't a tough rescue; we were able to drive right to him," Mattivi said. "Because of his condition we went ahead and called the helicopter for precautionary purposes."

James, thanks for the updates. Very glad to hear Dale made it out relatively okay. ROC

A little misinformation here. James has a vendetta against anyone associated with SJMG and seems relish in others being injured.

The guide in question does occasionally guide for SJMG, but was not guiding for SJMG when this accident took place, he was teaching an AMGA course to other guides.

Better title would be AMGA instructor injured.

Props to the guides/students that were able to self rescue and get him down safely.

Glad Dale is doing good and recovering from his injuries!

I'll confirm that Dale is recovering. He was struck from above, causing him to fall, but his top screw held (decent but not great 13cm screw, ice fractured/cracked but did not fail). He was instructing an AMGA course at the time. The helicopter was a good idea given the extent of the injuries. Derek DeBruin

I am not certain on that. It's my understanding that he was leading in a chimney (nearly every climb at the Skylight area qualifies) so subsequent injury was likely due to hitting the chimney walls. Derek DeBruin

Kerr Adams has posted here regularly and was one of the students/rescuers. Good job on taking care of the situation and a successful outcome. csproul
