Description

A large dirt parking lot that is very near the Scout Reservation on Waterloo Rd, Byram. A short dirt road leads to the lot which is directly across the road from Waterloo Village main entrance. Lots of potential for beginners and some challenges but get ready for a hike!

Rock in this area is mostly what seems to be quartzite granite. The quality of some of the rock is a bit chossy at times so bring a brush and test questionable holds. There are some amazing holds and features in Allamuchy and the friction is typically high and textures run the gamut from slick crystal to coarse feldspar.

There are two trails from the parking lot: one is to the right as you enter the lot and is marked with teal blazes as part of the Highlands Trail. The other is to the left side of the lot and is unmarked.

Do not trespass on the Scout Reservation. Signs make the boundary apparent. As facing up the hill on the unmarked trail, to the right is Allamuchy Mountain State Park, the left is restricted. The unmarked trail leads first to Look Mom! then to Drop Top which is off trail to the right and then The Karate Kid boulder further up the trail at the top of the hill. Over the hill and trending right is off trail access to the back area: Cumulus, Nimbus, Tall Wall, Big Fat Pauly, Z CRACKS.

Follow TEAL blazes from the lot to the left fork and across the first small stream for Doorknob area. Across the second stream bed is Cracked Boulder/Cross Stitch, Pickle and Leopard Print Pumps (LPP off trail) further up teal at the topoint of the hill. Follow the second streambed over big talus and blocks to The Spear, Darth Maul, Tall Wall and Cumulus/Nimbus and much more interesting rock.

There are other boulders along Waterloo Rd which are worth stopping and looking for. Please be respectful of the folks that live in the State Park and do not park on or walk through any private property.

Please tick and grade the lines if you climb them. Please use star ratings to denote quality of rock and "fun factor" relative to the areas problems. Most of the problems here wouldn't get any stars or would be 1 or 2 star problems in other "world class" areas. It's safe to say that Allamuchy doesn't have any "classic test pieces" so don't expect 3 or 4 star problems to be the best climbing you've ever done. And likewise, one star problems here are still fun! Let's continue to cater to climbers that are just beginning their outdoor bouldering journey!

!Leave nothing but chalk marks! That means no trail markers, no dog poop, no cig butts, beer cans, tape balls or other refuse, and definitely no camping or fire making, ever!! Please be respectful of the land, rock, wildlife, other hikers, bikers, hunters and climbers that use this area.

Getting There

From 80, exit to Stanhope, 206 to Waterloo Rd. Dirt parking area with teal trail blazes and an overgrown green chain link fence. Directly across the road from Waterloo Village main entrance.

A one move wonder with an easy top out, Sit start on the left side of the Karate Kid bulge. With your left hand in a slippery crystalline pocket, right hand on a sharp crimp, both feet off to the right on a small shelf. Deadpoint to an adequate handhold or the nice jug, then top out over the tallest point. Recently, Alex Martin sent Miyagi with a static sequence! First off, thanks Brian Hennebry for adding this area. Just a couple comments to make peoples' lives easier.

The parking area is off of Waterloo on a small single-lane dirt road. It's not like the parking for the roped climbs up the road with are big obvious dirt patches on Waterloo.

The teal trail entrance is marked with double teal blazes next to the righthand picnic table. There is a teal blaze on the right side of the parking area immediately where the dirt road enters that could lead your astray (not that I was fooled by it.... ahem).

The approach to the boulders is relatively short; you should reach the cracked boulder, for instance, in under ten minutes once you know where you are going.

rjPea, thank you for your input and help describing the location. It's a bit confusing since the Highlands Trail (teal blazes) follows and crosses much of Waterloo Rd. The lot is right next to the Scout Reservation and across the street from Waterloo Village Main Entrance. Hopefully as the summer cools to fall, more folks will get out and tick some of these climbs. I know it's not much but there is a lot of fun climbing, especially once the foliage falls and the bugs and humidity subside!

Thank you all for the info! I found the parking lot easily. The approach was short. Follow the teal trail and you'll come upon a "what would have been a stream" if the water hadn't dried up. Take a left there, off trail, and head up. The Cracked boulder will be visible. Best to go during fall or winter. OMG the bugs!! They were EVERYWHERE!!

Thanks for the input Michelle! The two streams are typically wet in the spring but dry up as the weather gets warmer. Being a wet area much of the year, the mosquitos in June and July are just too much. Right about now in late September, we're seeing perfect temperature conditions and the rain should dry up in the next few days. I hope you can make it back out! Enjoy!
