  • Climbing in this area is closed from April 1 - August 15 for bighorn sheep lambing.
  • RAIN, WET ROCK and RAPTOR CLOSURES: The sandstone around Moab is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Also please ask and be aware of Raptor Closures in areas such as CAT WALL and RESERVOIR WALL in Indian Creek MORE INFO >>>

  • Description

The Alcove is the first broad side canyon on the right (north) side of Gemini Bridges Road, reached after you enter Little Valley from Highway 191. The right side of the Alcove holds 4 nice mostly sunny cragging routes.

The left side of the Alcove also contains a few sunny cragging routes, described separately because the most direct parking and approach are different than for the Alcove Right. The Shabazz Palace is located farther up the canyon on the left side of the Alcove, across from the Alcove Right.

    Getting There

From Moab, take Highway 191 north for about 10 miles to the Gemini Bridges Road on the left. Follow the Gemini Bridges Road for 2.9 mi to a large parking area on the right. The Gemini Bridges Road often requires high clearance. The drive takes about 30 min from town.

From the parking area, hike NW up an old mining road toward the Alcove. The mining road crosses a wash early on, then follows the wash into the canyon. After a side drainage enters the main wash, leave the mining road and cross the main wash to gain a faint trail up a ridge that leads to the right side of the crag. Approach time is about 20 min.

Blocky wide climbing to off-fingers crux in the corner then cool moves into the splitter handcrack on the right wall. Kind of stout for the grade; felt like 5.10+....[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah
