Coming up the pitch 1 book August 2013

This area includes the peaks and cliffs on the Northwest side of the Chamonix valley (and extends northeast into Switzerland). Great views across the valley to Mont Blanc and snowcapped peaks, and great views of the Aiguilles de Chamonix rock peaks and walls on the Southwest side of the Chamonix valley.

But the Aiguilles Rouges have generally lower summits and different rock types.

In the history of Chamonix Mont Blanc, this area was largely overlooked as uninteresting for alpine objectives and inferior rock. But in recent decades, visionary route developers pried off much of the loose rock, and drilled bolts for protection. So now it's become a popular area, for not-so-intimidating multi-pitch rock climbs. Generally the difficulty quotations are not as tough as the old-mountaineering grades of the famous granite routes on the Mont Blanc side of the valley.

Getting There

This mountain group also extends northeast into Switzerland (where an obvious point of high access is the asphalt road above Finhaut to the Lac d'Emosson). The obvious high access points for the French sectors are Flegere lift and the Brevent lift.

So the key limitation for season of access to the French is dates which those lifts are operating, typically late June to early September in the summer season, and December through mid-April in the winter-spring season. Often the climbing (and hiking) is great also in May and October, but as of 2017 the management does not see fit to operate the lifts then, so it's the approach labor and time is much more.

This route is a true classic in the Aiguille Rouges. It maintains a fairly consistently difficulty throughout. The 4th and 5th pitches are real beauties with fantastic cracks somewhat anomalous for the Aiguilles Rouges. Pitch 1 (5.10-): The first pitch moves from a bolt on the face at the end of the approach path. From here, the climb move up the pillar and follows the bolt line. One or two difficult moves lead to a grassy ledge at the end of which is a belay before the next vertical sectio...[more]   Browse More Classics in International
