Description

Significant cliff in the low part of this crag.

The rock face is roughly 70-110 feet tall. Faces ENE.

Top-Roping: To access the top of this cliff scramble up around the right side to the top of sector 4, then traverse south (some slabs) to the top of sector 3.

Name: The June Lake Loop has long been recognized as a little visit to Switzerland. "Giétroz" is a crag of gneiss rock in the southwest corner of Switzerland, just near the border with France near Chamonix.

Pronounce sector "Giétroz" (using the French language of western Switzerland) - roughly as ... jee-uh-trohz.

warning: The rock in this sector has not been climbed much yet, and some of the rock is still breakable and loose -- so the belayer and other people should stand far away from underneath the climber.

Getting There

hiking approach: Follow the instructions on the Silver Lake area description page for hiking from the southern end of Parking to reach southern left-hand side of sector 3.

Or perhaps follow the instructions for hiking from the north end of Parking to the northern right-hand sectors -- useful to reach Right side of sector bottom, if one member of the party wants to set up a top-rope anchor. First go S across the bottom of sector 4, then short steep diagonal uphill to reach sector 3.

Time + effort estimate: From south end of parking lot to the base of the left (S) side of this sector is about +130 vertical feet over 0.15 mile distance (+40m over 0.25km), so typical range of hiking times 6-12 minutes.

Time + effort estimate: From north end of parking lot to the base of the right (N) side of this sector is about +150 vertical feet over 0.2 mile distance (+45m over 0.32km), so typical range of hiking times 8-15 minutes.

Variety of interesting moves.Mount the leaning flake, next up the face (arete is on) to a ledge. Next trend left a bit, and up on fun flakes to reach left-trending ridge, and along crest of ridge to meet the next route to the left.warning: 60 meter rope is likely not long enough to lower off or rappel from top of this climb, if continue on another route to top of cliff. Re-check rope length and make sure to tie a knot in the other end of the rope so climber does not drop off befo...[more]   Browse More Classics in California
