With a little searching on this site you can find numerous forums about this topic and many options you can choose from.

Options include special water based markers
tying an overhand
threading the sheath with some bright sting or floss
returning your rope for a bi pattern
and other smart ass remarks.

I use the rub a dub laundry market. No acid, water based. Wears off with use, but works well.

You can use a special Sharpie marker made for lab use, won't degrade ropes etc... do a google search, several places sell them.

i use the 'thread some floss in the sheath' method and it works really well. you can feel it when it goes through your belay device, and you can also feel it in the dark. i have done this with several ropes and have been happy with the results.

Use a Rub-a-dub and be done with it.

'Sharpie T.E.C.'(trace element certified) markers are safe for use on nylon ropes, even BlueWater approves. It MUST be a sharpie TEC, the TEC part is very important...

Here's a LINK.

Not sure about the Sharpie Industrial, but I have been told by the BlueWater rep that Sharpie T.E.C. is safe.

Email the rope manufacturer and find out what they recommend for their own product.

New England recommends the "Marks a Lot' Marker.

Most obvious is cut it and tie a knot in it.

I used a product by Beal on my ropes:

gearexpress.biz/Merchant2/m…

I did verify with the manufacture if it was ok, and they said yes.

Sharpie Rub-a Dub Laundry are the ones rope companies say to use for your rope.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
