Marking climbing rope

I have a Sterling Pro 10.1mm rope and I don't have a middle marker.  What is the best way to mark the middle?  Paint?

Thank you,

Tie a knot in the middle.

I just take to it with a thick end sharpie.  They make a special marker but the sharpie has worked fine.

I've used a sharpie before and didn't die. That being said rope companies refuse to recommend sharpie as the formulation can change without notice.  If you're worried about it,  beal sells rope marking ink.

A while back I emailed Sterling about the Beal rope marker, and they got back to me and said it’s totally fine for their ropes.

Unlike all the happy Sharpie users here, I preffer to thread floss in my mid-point.  The non-flavoured ones are pure nylon so I know it will be non reactive and on top of being very visible, it's also tactile so I never forget to yell "mid-point" to my leader.

+1 on threading some floss on your rope.

If I'm gonna do a bunch of rappelling, I often put a thin strand of climbing tape at the middle. It'll pass through a gri gri or atc.

I use a rope marker from a rope manufacturer (tendon, but Beal also makes one). Even less likely it will be dangerous than any other type of sharpie. It does cost like twice or triple that of a sharpie, but that's just a coffee more, so worth the piece of mind to me.

‘nother vote here for using something recommended by rope manufacturers.

Partner of mine once used an arbitrary black marker which chemically reacted with the rope, visibly and permanently reducing the diameter in the marked area.

My preferred method is with rope marking ink. I believe it is graphite in alcohol but not sure. Goes on looking exactly like the marks applied by manufacturers.  I apply it about once a year. That ink bottle has lasted forever.

once saw a suggestion, that I used and it worked fine, of using a sewing needle to pull several lengths of dental floss loosely through the mid point, cutting the loops of floss so they form short hairs if you would.  they feed through a device with no affect the they are easily seen and make your rope smell minty.

Beet juice.

No, actually, I use a Sharpie. But beet juice would work great unless you have a purple or dark red rope.
