I’m so sick of seeing new routes on Mountain Project. There’s never anyone climbing there until some dumbass, show off, know it all posts up a description, a topo, the approach, what gear to bring and like a hundred photos. Then there’s a line of gumbies at the base every weekend and two parties on the route. One party’s trying to pass via a variation. That party shouldn’t even be passing in the first place!

Cheap climbing shoes are effective enough for the vast majority of climbers. Solutions/TC pros are a waste of money.

- What grade you climb has little-to-no relation to your ability and knowledge around climbing safety techniques. Some of the most risky climbers are experienced people who decided they know enough and stopped learning.
- Whether or not to bolt a crack is a matter of local aesthetic. If you wouldn't bolt an X-rated route in Indian Creek, that's an admission that bolting has nothing to do with safety, so you should have no problem with bolting a route at Rumney that's G-rated on gear.
- The GriGri might have been the best device for belaying the leader at one time, but there are a bunch of easier-to-use, safer devices on the market now. The correct way to feed out slack as stated by the manual isn't as foolproof as people think it is.
- Most of the opinions on this thread are popular opinions, or opinions that aren't unpopular because nobody actually takes them seriously.

To add to what Bill said: All these asshole first ascentionists need to just stop. They are selfish and recklessly endangering other climbers, and anyway there are already enough routes in the world .

If you hurt yourself climbing it's your own fault 100% of the time
