For our honeymoon we are headed to Argentina and looking to split time between Patagonia (El Chalten) and Mendoza. We will be in country for a little over two weeks. A few questions:
We would likely be doing some of the hiking/trekking in the area, but wouldn't be doing any alpine climbing. Is it worth bringing a rack? Most of my experience and comfort is with sport climbing, and I am a little hesitant to drag a rack out there, but could be persuaded.
We were looking at doing some climbing in Patagonia and understand there is some climbing in El Chalten, and are interested in also climbing in Mendoza if feasible.
How is the climbing? How accessible is it? What's the best way to get there?
We pretty early in or planning. Any suggestions (climbing, hiking, lodging, ect) would be appreciated.
Great sport with fantastic camping at Piedra Parada. A bit out of the way from Chalten though (Pata is huge). Frey has good and fairly moderate trad in a spectacular setting.
Outside of Mendoza is escarabajo, it's alright sport climbing and accessible by bus. Great highline community there, go find them in the parks of Mendoza (can't miss the 100m lines they string up daily!). They climb too... Santuario near San Rafael is incredible sport climbing, but very difficult to access.
If you head to bouldering/climbing gyms, you'll find community and perhaps local information on good places to climb. Chalten has lots of sport climbing I've heard too.

ElChalten has sport climbing, but it’s no destination. If you want to hike/trek around the awesome peaks, then go...
