I don't see what the fuss is, apparently you can smoke them...... ;)

FYI - Biodegrade

Paper bag - 1 month.
Apple core - 8 weeks.
Orange peel and banana skins - 2 years

So maybe you should pack out your fruit peels and leave the paper bags because they will disappear alot faster.

As for why I don't pack out my banana peels, I have seen no compelling evidence not to. There's alot of conjecture on this thread and links to websites with conjecture but no actual proof that banana peels harm the environment. Do you believe everything you read on the internet?

"I hope others are inspired by what I post"

Just curious, are you fine with dumping whatever on a random front lawn when you walk by? Leave a trail through a park when you eat lunch? I realize you are all enjoying debating this, but that's what it comes down to for me, just simple courtesy for our shared spaces.

Best, Helen

For the debaters: banana peels don't compost very quickly, nor do orange peels, corn cobs, nut shells, and eggshells, among other things. This means being part of an active, well built, compost pile, not just jettisoned somewhere. Just what I recall off the top of my head from my former old lady life as a master gardener, turning over compost piles now and then.

That said, if you know what you're doing, whole cow carcasses can be composted!

Pistachio and sunflower shells at the crag are also pretty annoying.

What is wrong with you people?

Had to chuckle.  This whole thread is an exercise in turning over compost piles.  And... we know that we can spread what comes out of the cow, too.  haha.

That too.

OLH has proudly shoveled quite a lot of shit over the decades...

I am guilty I pack out my banana peels but I leave the part I eat on the anchors of some random route when I am out climbing. Trust me it mostly decomposed at that point.

The eyesore argument is perfectly valid but that's simply a preference. I'm sure there's someone out there who prefers the view of trash. For the sake of this thread, we are now talking about out of sight banana peels. Do they harm the environment????

Btw, "I hope others are inspired by what I post" refers to material on the database. Here's what I have to say about the forums: "The forums, well, that's debate club. Post if you dare. Take it too seriously and you will be chopped off at the knees, don't take it serious enough and off with your head."

So, it's assholishness and stubbornness, with a little bit of laziness? Cool, that's all I was curious about. Like I said, I'm already done trying to convince you.

Cheers!

Oh I'm sure you are a saint of the environment. Of course you ride your bike everywhere and eat vegan and nurse baby seals back to health. Right? Your high horse has false legs.

What Greg said. It's not all or nothing, and this is so easy you're just being kind of lazy and stubborn.

Not saying it's all or nothing but if you want to attack me personally then I require you take a look in the mirror, I'll bet you are also "lazy and stubborn" or you are carbon neutral? Real confessions please :)

if it wasnt there when i got there i pack it out. this includes banana peels, candy wrappers, toilet paper, rock thats come off the wall, fallen climbers, newly sprouted plants, etc. but seriously, just be conscious of your ecological impact. General consensus is most fruits take 1-6 months to decompose, not the few days that most people want to believe. just pack a couple cheap ziploc bags and put the trash in there, the extra effort to do that over just tossing it is very minimal. having said that i dont think its right to yell at anyone for simple stuff like a banana peel. now if theyre being a total jerk at the crag and making a complete mess thats a different story.

There's a woman here in Colorado who has been on the news for jogging through neighborhoods and crapping in people's front yards.  No harm no foul.  It biodegrades right?

In the pooping case it's clear that the neighborhood is worried about the sight and smell not if it's compost or not. If she was burying her poop it wouldn't be an issue, besides the trespassing of course.

Here's a nice video about the orange peel experiment.

The exhaust from your car ride to wherever it is you climb has more effect. People don't wanna see banana peels left out but toss that shit under a bush or at a distance out of sight and you're fine. Taking this too far people. If I just let the hate flood gates open so be it

Hey man... logic has no place here!

I guess more important is when folks bag their dog crap and then leave the bag of dog crap to decompose.  like that makes sense.  I think a banana peel is a bit less toxic.  just remove the little sticker and make sure you stick that on your "look at me, I'm so cool" water bottle. just don't cover up the BD or sportiva stickers.

100% of people exhale while at the crag and leave their carbon dioxide. People really need to start exhaling into a jar or something.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
