Description Suggest change

Mount Harvey, at 1652 metres, is one of the peaks in the area of the Lions, near the town of Lions Bay, and is located along the famous Howe Sound Crest hiking trail. As is typical of the mountains in the area, the views from the summit are spectacular, and it is a worthwhile hiking destination.

Although there are several routes on Mount Harvey, climbing activity is mainly concentrated on the North Face Ramp (4th class), and the Pup Buttress (5.10a), both located on the north side of the mountain. The NF Ramp reaches the summit of Mount Harvey, while the Pup Buttress climbs to the summit of a lower feature called Harvey's Pup which is separated from Mount Harvey by a deep gully.

Approach Suggest change

The approach for all routes is from the village of Lions Bay. A small parking area (elevation 230 metres) is located at the north end of Sunset Drive, and as of September 2017 a fee of $8 was charged for the day. Overflow (and free) parking is located further down the hill at the school on Bayview Road. Limited street parking is available nearby as well.

From the parking area hike up the steep road. At the seventh switchback, a spur road branches left and is signed for Brunswick mountain. Continue up the main road for a few hundred metres to another spur road branching left. This road is reached after gaining about 400-450 metres in elevation, and provides access to the climbing routes on Mount Harvey. As of September 2017 this road was unsigned. Note that the hiking trail to Mount Harvey's summit is farther up the main road, and is signed for Mount Harvey.

Follow the climbing access road as it narrows to a trail to reach a talus field. Rack up here for the Pup Buttress as the descent comes down this talus field. Cross the initial portion of the talus field, the climb up and left, aiming for the obvious ramp on the north face of Mount Harvey. This is the North Face Ramp route, and the Pup Buttress begins from low on this ramp. As of September 2017 the route to the ramp was flagged with pink tape.
