Description Suggest change

The Caverns is a neglected limestone crag guarded by a long drive and challenging 30 minute approach straight uphill. Once the horror of the approach has subsided, the enjoyment of the routes makes the approach worth it. The rock is perfect blue and yellow limestone most comparable to Lover's Leap Limestone. The routes are covered with great edges, deep pockets, jugs, and great friction. There are not really any trails, so your first time at the Caverns can be a challenge, but once you figure your way around, it is a pretty neat alternative to the Underwood Mountain limestone at the Aretes and Castle Rock.

From Arcata, drive east on 299 to Big Bar. Cross the bridge on Forest Route 16 and follow it for slightly less than 20 miles to a T-intersection. Take a left passing two signs: "End County Road" and "33N47." At about a mile you'll cross a bridge, followed by a campsite on the right. About 1/4 mile later is a small concrete culvert hidden on the left side of the road. Park here and hike straight up the hill, trending ever so slightly right.
