Description Suggest change

Once an area popular with climbers and guided climbing groups, this area is now CLOSED to climbing. The information on this page is for reference only.

A nice secluded spot with a variety of bouldering and top rope problems. It is mostly wooded and shady, but the main wall gets a lot of sun near the top, especially earlier in the day.

The top of the wall is just about ideal for setting up top rope, with lots of large sturdy trees for anchors. Also recommend following the trail to the top overlook point, where there is a very nice view of the valley.

Nearby is the (now closed) "Blue Hole" swimming hole, just across the dirt road and downhill from the climbing.

Getting There Suggest change

Access to this area is closed, and there is currently a gate on Mt. Carmel road. Information below is for historic purposes only.

About 20 min from Dunbar, PA. A larger vehicle is recommended, as the last few miles are rough dirt roads with huge unavoidable potholes. Google maps will get you very close. Where Camp Carmel Rd ends on the map, you can go straight and park in a large lot there. Hiking up the (very rutted) dirt road from there will take you to the top of the cliffs where you can set up your top rope.

Alternatively, you can turn left and go down the hill a few hundred yards, where there is a small parking area on the left. Slightly uphill from the lot look for a pipe across the road to find the trail head on your left (looking uphill). It is a short walk through a boulder field to the large wall. It is possible to hike up around the wall to the right, though a bit steep and muddy.
