The Kern River cuts a canyon straight south for 30 miles to pass below The Needles. To the north, separated from the sources of the Kern by Mt. Erikkson and the Kings Kern Divide, the three mighty forks of the Kings River drain a huge area of the Sierra Nevada west of the Palisades Crest.

The Monarch Divide, marked here in red, rises steeply to the east from Yucca Point, the confluence of the south and middles forks.
