Quebec City climbing
|
Going to be in Quebec City Monday 17th of July. Can anyone recommend a good spot to climb relatively close to downtown? thanks in advance! |

Other than a few gyms, I don't think there is much to climb very close to town. A bit over an hour drive northeast you've got places such as St. Urbain and Les Palissades (trad) on the north shore of the St. Lawrence and Kamouraska (sport) on the south shore. |
|
Kamouraska would have been my thought, too. About 110 miles (170km) from Quebec city, but supposed to be a good sport-climbing crag. |

Kamouraska is an excellent crag--very good rock--orthoquartzite--which feels and climbs like like a mix of sandstone, limestone, and quartzite with a good mix of grades and stunning views. The drive from Quebec City didn't seem to be as long as 110 miles, but even if it is, once you get away from the city environs it is a very easy drive (almost all on highway) and increasingly scenic. A bit of a thread hijack, but does anyone know of any rock climbing out on the Gaspe? |

You should check out Mont Wright, about 30 mnt north of quebec city, nice spot, many access for TR and good amount of sports single pitch. And few 2 pitch also u can link for longer climbs |

Great! Thank you to everyone! |

There's plenty to keep you occupied. What kind of climbing are you looking for? How long of a drive? Indoors, I would recommend Delire. Outdoors, there's plenty: Mt Wright - Mostly top rope, but some trad possible too if you want. http://qc.drtopo.com/north-america/canada/quebec/mont-wright/mont-wright.pdf Vieux-Stoneham - Multipitch trad https://www.escaladequebec.com/topos/topo_vieux_stoneham2017.pdf Le Pylone - Easy top-rope: https://www.fqme.qc.ca/images/stories/sitesacces/Topos/Le_Pylone.pdf Le Champlain - harder top-rope: https://www.fqme.qc.ca/images/stories/sitesacces/Topos/Le_Pylone.pdf Val-Bélair - Mostly top-rope, but trad and sport possible: http://qc.drtopo.com/north-america/canada/quebec/val-belair Stonebleau (Mt Wright) - best bouldering spot, https://www.escaladequebec.com/topos/Stonebleau_MtWright.pdf That's all <1hr from downtown if you have a car, approach included. If you want to go a bit farther, there's a ton more, of even better quality. If you don't have a car, the only areas accessible would be the Pylone and Champlain (they are a few minutes walk from each other). Take a city bus to as close to the bridges as you can (sorry - I don't remember the best bets; I've been away from Qc for too long. I think the 800 and 801 buses will put you within walking distance, and they go through downtown too.) From the shopping malls area it's probably <30 minutes walk, but you will want a map (or google maps) to navigate the mess of streets and highways on foot. Alternatively, you can take a cab to the Ste-Foy (not Quebec!) train station, and you will be a few minutes' walk away from the crags. Beware of poison ivy in the fields! Have fun, Marc |
