Description Suggest change

Catamount is hardly a rock-climbing "destination" area, but it does provide an interesting option for a group that has both climbers and hikers-only, in that there's a fair* hiking trail that leads within 100 ft of the climbs and then continues on to the summit. Great views both where the trail passes over the slab (within 100 ft of the climbs on the South Summit Slab) and the main Summit.

  • "Fair" because it is quite eroded in places, due to use and, I would think, wash-outs due to Hurricane Irene.

Getting There Suggest change

Get yourself to the 4-way intersection with Rt 86 in "downtown" Wilmington, NY.
Take the Veterans Memorial Highway for about 2.7 - 2.8 miles, and bear right at the fork (left would take you to the toll booth).
Take this road (County 72) for about 3.5 miles and turn right onto Roseman Road.
Take Roseman about 0.7 miles and take a right on Forestdale Rd.
Follow Forestdale (aka Plank Road) for about 1.7 -1.8 miles to the new NY-State Parking lot on the left. (Holds about 20-25 cars). About half way along this road you get a great view of Catamount. (photo)
