Climbing on outhouse disrespectful?

There is a jokester route on MP of a "bouldering" problem that climbs a concrete bathroom. The kind of bathroom that are in outdoor areas everywhere - a structure entirely made of concrete. The poster has rated the climb V2 to surmount the roof of the outhouse.

Someone raised concern that this is bad for climbers and could potentially get access taken away. I strongly disagree that some antics on a concrete bathroom would get access taken away. The post seems a bit "helicopter mom-y" to me. BUT I am not always right. Thoughts?

Comment on route page:

"I hate to be the buzzkill police around here, but this is exactly the type of behavior from climbers that BLM officials see as disrespectful and potentially destructive, creating an issue for us when the time comes to be addressed as a user group. I like a good antic, but we have to see things from the lens of the officials who are tasked with the governance of this land. Never underestimate the power of what we perceive as a small stunt to radically shape peoples' opinions of us.

Climbers, just like so many other folk, often times lack the perspective to treat public lands and the accompanying facilities properly, and if we are not careful, our beloved access can be denied. In the newly-bargained deal to create a National Monument that includes the Indian Creek area, I sat with folks who graciously allowed climbers to have a seat at the drafting table. We assured them that climbers, as a cohesive community, care deeply about this place and will help to maintain and protect it. If we're seen as a bunch of disrespectful jokesters, it's harder to make that case.

I would like to see an administrator take this page down, so that this type of thing isn't seen to be condoned or encouraged by the community at large. Please help us in keeping the HK Honorary Shitter, as well as our relations with our local land managers, in good condition for future generations!"

I think it's disrespectful and not a good idea, your in the great outdoors annnnnd your going to pick the only building around to climb on??? A lot of peeps are petty and I could def. see another user group looking down on this, and bringing it up at inopportune times(Blm meetings) I've watched similar things happen in the mtb community.... stuff that just makes you slap your forehead in disbelief

Buildering an outhouse is maybe a fun innocent prank.

Posting a route description (or a widely viewed trip report) is just a stupid way to draw attention to climber mischief.

Some things should stay word of mouth.

People would still be swinging on Corona Arch (not that I'm particularly in favor of that) if it weren't for the video.

The fact that the "route" has been posted since 2011 suggests that it hasn't really endangered access too much. Not that funny a joke either, YMMV.

I will just say that it may draw unnecessary attention. I live in the Twin Cities area and have been scoping and recording quite a few places to do urban bouldering (which I don't think the outhouse falls into the category since it is an amenity for a park, which is also where the disrespect part could come into play). Anyhow, I've kept all of them secret and have decided against posting anything public for various reasons.

It all comes down to having appropriate fun and treading lightly when needed. Climbing an outhouse is totally fine. But doing it in front of the wrong people, under the wrong circumstances could bring on other issues as well. Is that thing really V2?

If you climb a crapper you are disrespecting yourself!

The only time people ever get in trouble is when someone gets hurt.

Fully commit to the joke with pad, spotter, etc. and even whiny helicopter moms can't complain.

I understand the valid concern about stupid stunts making the climbing community look reckless and juvenile. This concern certainly has merit.

The concept that any user group should be grateful to gracious mother government for allowing us to voice our opinion about how our public lands should be managed is deeply flawed. Their job is to listen to all user groups and effectively manage a shared resource. I'm not a fan of the proposed solution that we censor our fellow climbers humor lest we provoke a vindictive government who will communally punish us like a child by taking away our climbing areas.

It's only disrespectful if someone is using said outhouse at the time of the climb.

How would a climber feel if there were a group of horse people camped in the site next to you and they were galloping their horses around and jumping over the picnic table in the campsite? Similarly boorish behavior IMO.

Hello gang. My opinion on the subject has already been expressed, but it's important for me to point out that Matt's comment is ill-informed. I wasn't referring to the government or its officials. I was referring to the Inter-Tribal Coalition folks and their lawyers who were involved in drafting regulations that will apply to Bears Ears. I think that's an important clarification to make.

Climbers have a long history of building. To whit something currently on the front page of MP: climbing.com/videos/hard-co…

Though such actions may not get access taken away but it may not help the conversation. Especially, with non climbing land managers who have to maintain these buildings and may not see the humor.

IMHO the more objection part is not that some has posted the "route" description but that there are pictures of people on top of the outhouse - as opposed to the side:

I am not sure of the material but the potential for damage may be off putting by land managers. Yeah it is a roof ...

If the building is concrete who cares you aren't even likely to make enough sound for people inside aware of your climbing.

I work night shift for now so I was bored at 4 am and have long periods of time to myself. I don't always have a clear mind at 4 am. Upon reflection, yes this is a pretty trivial discussion, and if I saw it I may have posted a "who cares??" comment as well. I will do better about making clearer posts.

On another note, the bear ears access is a pressing topic now…I could have worded my post better but it was 4 am. Anyways, thanks for responding to the post.

Greg.
