Anyone in Oregon
|
Anyone out in Oregon? My partner and I were heading to Mt. Hood this weekend. Everything is already booked, she's coming from Colorado and me from DC. Both have good Alpine experience. I saw the winds and snow that's coming in this weekend 3/2-3/6. Any recommendations? Should we try to cancel the trip? Will a summit be feasible? |

Doesn't look promising, but you probably will need to wait until the end of the week to make a decision. Keep an eye on the avy forecast and trends: |
|
We're supposed to fly in on Thursday and have ourselves 3 summit days. |
|
Ok? |

Snow has been much heavier than usual in the PNW during the past few days. It's unlikely to be a safe time to climb. You'd be better off hanging out on the ski resort (that's what I'm doing with my gf this weekend). |

Hey Ben, |

Sorry, have to concur. I climb hood almost exclusively Nov-Mar and this weekend is totally out of the question. Even if there was a climbable-looking window (Which I don't see) there's too much precip and wind leading up to it. Mt Hood is not a place to climb into a 50+ wind forecast period. This weekend is combining that with precip and below zero temps. |

I asked about November in an earlier post because I went in November. The fog set in and we lost all visibility, with the wind and rain it became too dangerous. |

Thanks for everyone's opinion. It solidified the deal. |

I thought I would seek your opinions before I made the final cancellation call. And yeah, you did sound like a dick... Anytime you have to say "not trying to sound like a dick" you're about to say something that sounds like a dick. No, he gave you advice from an experienced local, just what you asked for. It sounds like you've got your head on straight, though, hope you'll work it out when it's a good time. The usual spring/summer info/timing likely won't apply to big chunks of the west this year, so keep the ridiculous winter in mind for any reschedule. Not aimed at you OP, just curious. Kyle and locals, if authorities recommend against going up Hood, and people go anyway, haven't they charged in recent years for rescues? Best, OLH |

In general the local authorities don't advise regarding the suitability of conditions for a climb in any circumstance (good or bad) that I am aware of. |

It looks so crappy I don't think I'd even go skiing at Mt Hood Meadows this weekend. Mt Hood isn't worth it. |

Went skiing on Hood this weekend. I woke up with 1.5ft of snow on my car. Yesterday visibility sucked above 6000. |
