Trimming these damn queen palms a couple of times a year has gone from laborious hell to aid climbing practice and wanting to do the Nose.

Clearing the roof and busting down ice dams.

Rigging z-drags to free wrapped rafts.

I did that for some random lady who lived a few apartments down from me. I ended up using some half inch webbing to put a wrap around a tree next to her open second floor window. More of a coconut farmer technique, right? Ha ha.

-Jar opening... but I guess that's more "climbing strength"

-Balancing on the stairs and reaching out to turn off the smoke alarm.

Working as a welder/mechanic/millwright in paper mills, mines, and in the Alaskan fishing industry.
Being the guy who will volunteer to do all the sketchy, elevated, and at fall risk work def. guarantees you a reliable spot on the crew. It also means you'll get stuck with a lot of dirty work though.
I've performed a few tasks on some lime kilns 50 ft. off the concrete foundation by myself in 10-12 hrs, , that I was told have taken 2-3 guys twice as long or better to do in the past.

Being willing and able to carry your own weight and that of your tools and materials, while remaining comfortable in awkward and precarious positions, is certainly a worthy skill to learn/possess in many industrial/construction settings.

Some aspects of climbing help the mental game.

"Hey my partner and I were avalanched over a cliff last month and survived a 300 ft fall. I guess it's a little silly to be nervous over a client presentation today."

Maybe not the best example.

Party tricks and entertainment.

My climbing daughter can do a somersault around the seat of a chair -- starting from seated and back to seated -- without ever touching the ground. She's not even that small - 5'3"

The entertainment comes in watching adults and other kids make a go at it.

Yesterday at PetSmart, buying cat food, I thought of ways my climbing skills have helped me. Whiskas appeared to be out of stock until I looked way up high on the shelving unit.

This reminded me that I regularly climb up shelves at stores to reach what I need when lower shelves have been cleared. Best done when no one is looking and always test the stability of the shelves before leaving the ground.

Also, because of climbing, I can carry my 83 lbs dog up a flight of stairs and into the bathtub. He's a dead weight heel-digger when he senses my intention to bath him. I only weigh 32 more lbs than he does.

I also quite nicely tied my my van door closed when it was broken.

climbing friend,

it is reason I have sculpted guns and the chiseling abs, in addition to stunning features.

It's helped with those weird balancy awkward moves....on a ladder when doing painting, carpentry, tree trimming.

It's also helped stressful meetings to feel not so stressful by comparison to a hairy ordeal on the rock.

There are many other examples, but this one is still pretty high on the list:

Not climbing skills, but MP itself! You rock, guys!

Thanks for being the wonky oddballs you are. OLH
