+1 if it hasn't been plussed (plused?) yet.

Plus, you can easily invest that 2% and use dividends to buy more gear (in like 20 years, but still)

The cards have cool outdoor pictures on them.

Oh Ya. Just got my Chase Sapphire Reserve. Not a long term card, but signed up for the bonus.

And btw with any Chase card right now you can shop through chase (just following a link) and get 5% back through backcountry.com. Dont know how long that will last though.

To the OP. Its all about what you are going to charge on your card. For example common household expenses are groceries and gas and the Amex blue cash prefered has 6% cash back on groceries and 3% gas. or if you want to go simple you could do the Citi card which is effectively 2% cash back on everything or Wells fargo has a 1.5% cash back on everything.

There is a lot of good info on the interwebs to help you out...not MP.com. One important thing is pay off your balance every month to avoid the high interest rates.

Comes with an easy to use app so I pay it off like once a week. Basically just getting free money from REI and I'm too lazy to look into all the other cards.

I'm pretty shocked to hear anyone say they have a Citi card, as they charge unconscionable interest rates. I finally got rid of mine recently after getting an REI Mastercard, and it's well worth it just for that and the 1% on gas/groceries/etc (the grocery thing is apparently changing in March).

It was already mentioned but if you are paying any interest on the card the rewards are not worth it.

Pay your card off every month and never worry about what the rate is.

Do you still get the $100 gift card when you sign up? That's the only reason I got it. That's almost two C4s for free.

Treat your credit card like your debit card - don't spend what you don't have.

I like my all around credit card over the REI card. But I've get my reservations about that store.

I never understood the appeal of the REI dividend. Everything is so expensive in that store. They charge you $110 for a $100 item, then turn around and give you the $10 back a year later as if it's some huge bonus. Sounds like taxes. I'd rather just shop sales and lightly used. Most every item I've seen in that store I've managed to find much cheaper elsewhere. To each their own I guess.

I bought a REI membership a few years ago and bought some things including a REI-exclusive graphics snowboard. Then I never used my dividend and it expired last week because even with the dividend, I'd spend more than elsewhere. I understand the appeal of a physical store to touch things and try things because I rarely return disappointments I get over the internet, but the stock seems limited (even online), never on sale, and they never have my shoe size to try (no physical store does) or even online to buy.

Um, when they mail you your dividend info they tell you in the note that you can get it in cash any time after July 1.

I pay for a couple flight every year with my chase points. Would rather fly to climb than buy a new headlamp (admittedly unfair comparison)

I second the Citi Double Cash Card. 2% on everything. I also use the REI CC only on REI purchases and groceries. The dividend you get back outweighs the discounts you get elsewhere (especially if you ship to store as its FREE). Just pay off everything off each month, or else you'll just dig yourself in a hole and find yourself throwing money away instead of getting those sweet dividend checks.

This sums up my use of the card - the app makes it REALLY easy to pay it off multiple times a month.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
