for all curious (and thanks for everyone's input, both pro and con!) my brother decided to postpone the climb for another time. Turned out to be a good idea, because after just playing pond hockey for an hour his knees and hips were in pain as he is still recovering from a lingering summer injury.

Jeez. He could have found that out with an hour hike around his city and saved us 4 pages of effort!

This might have been the first useful MP post... ever.

nathaniel Dray-

Did your brother ever read this thread?

That's too bad. Climbing use to be a rebellious activity soaked with adventure. All the soccer moms posting on this site probably encouraged him against a good adventure, even if he turned around. It could have started a fire for the love climbing. This "sport" is beginning to be lame. The masses once again killed a good thing

Next time, hit him in the knee with a baseball bat. He will hate you at first and even try to crawl up to you for revenge but over time he will thank you.

Tell your brother he's a big puss....should have gone for it ! If it got bad he turns around (partner is experienced?) and if it was good weather, a great experience potential.

Russ - he made the decision not to go before reading the thread after seeing how his knees were feeling, but I showed him anyway. He said it was 'interesting' but would not have persuaded/dissuaded him either way.

it should make for a good obit read in the upcoming months, but unlike the good obits of WWII vets who went on to become CEO's or inventors or donated all of their wealth to charity, this kid will just go down as ignorant and foolish with hundreds of people saying, "i told you so".

what's your mom's address, so we know where to send flowers.

Sounds like once his knee(s) heal we'll be reading a news story about his rescue in the coming days/weeks/months (?). Wise people can learn from others mistakes, fools only learn from making their own.

I should have said "Buddha says" before that last line, otherwise I would get flack for suggesting people make mistakes out of ignorance.

As mentioned, instead of an all or nothing approach, maybe suggest a few appropriate winter beginners hikes. If all works out and he likes it, then turn it up a notch. Washington shouldn't be taken lightly, it sounds like he still thinks it should.

1. weather isn't the only thing that might cause a party to turn around - does our noob know what and when?

2. A lot of people have been injured or died on Washington despite "turning around when things got bad". As one example, Hugh Herr and his partner.

Common, guys, we still don't actually know if either/both/neither of these bros are a dufous.

Little brother making his own decision in the face of all our opinions?

Hmmmm....

:-)

Snowing like mad here, on top of ALL the earlier stuff. Not out usual winter at all! Crazy, crazy!! I'm on the bus, and three plowing vehicles just went down the other side of the street. The bus was sliding, too.

OLH, rock seems like geologic ages away. :-(

I heartily dislike listening to people go on and on about the dangers of Mt. Washington, which in general, are fairly obvious.

Something like a half-million people every year muck around on Mt. Washington & maybe a half-dozen or so do hurt themselves....What ever the precise figures, it's definitely on that order of magnitude.

Somebody above is talking about effects of ALTITUDE??? OMG...alternate fact alert.......Avalanches???? The Lion Head Winter Route is basically NEVER threatened.....The daily advisories make this plain.....

Assuming a little common sense & humility about when to turn around (definitely), & that one isn't an utter moron........... it's just not a big deal to give it a shot, provided you don't lose yer mittens!!

The real danger is navigating in the Pinkham Notch lounge so as to avoid all the posturing drugstore cowboys' warnings.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
