simplify.

Toilet Paper - poop before you go, in an emergency use a rock or stick after walking a looong way from the crag
Wet Wipes - no, maybe hand sani if you plan on pooping at the crag that much
(on second thought, just carry a wag bag and poop away!)
Matches/lighter - and smokes?!
Gloves - redundant with Belay gloves
Sunscreen - don't grease my proj! Apply in the morning way before you touch the rock, wear a hat, find shade. Really, sunscreen is great but should come nowhere near climbing rope or gear. Friction matters. The best thing I've found is Neutrogena makes a deodorant stick type sunscreen that keeps the hands clean.
Pen/pencil - only if you really use it.
Extra shoe lace - needless clutter?

Knife - honest question: what have people used this for at a sport crag?? I have only ever trimmed shoe rubber and sliced cheese. probably not needed.

Climbing tape, Headlamp - always.

A couple long slings - nice on some sport routes to straighten the rope line or make a clip from a better stance

Sunglasses.

Fingernail clippers - often handy for cleaning up flappers, cuticles etc between burns

Jesus christ you haul all that crap to the crag?? I hope your approach is short.

All you need is a rope, draws, harness, and some water.

I mean god bless, do you really need wet wipes?
a hat and gloves for summer?
you have belay gloves and gloves??
extra shoe lace?
extra chalk really?? just put it in your chalk bag.
food AND a luna bar? thats just crazy dude
advil? why? just walk to the car. probably faster than waiting for the advil to work
tape for sport climbing? I dont get it

  • edit - my mind is just blown. what do you take for mulitpitch?? alpine??

not sure what the west coast is like but here in PA bug spray is mandatory unless youre immune to bug bites (in which case im mega jealous)

a first aid kit seems like a good idea.

What you "need" and what might come in handy are probably not the same thing. You're carrying it - take whatever you want.

grog m aka Greg McKee: You think I carry all that crap to the crag? What do you think my wife is for. Seriously, I started this list pretty minimal but kept adding things as others suggested them. I wouldn't carry all the stuff on the list but wanted to come up with a comprehensive list for others, turned into not for just sport but for backpacking, multipitch and alpine etc.

Keep it light and simple. Food, water, harness, GriGri, draws, rope, chalkbag, maybe a bail biner or two, climbing shoes. That's pretty much it. If you dont intend to use it, dont bring it. All this stuff that people think they "need" never ends up getting used.

Michael Kilts wrote:great list! I will reference your list to help me with my own pack. I like the idea of a leaver biner, a friend and I had to leave a draw on the wall once because neither of us could complete the route.
Why not just take one of the carabiners off as a bail? No need to leave a complete draw.

Ditch the bug spray, chalk, extra chalk, chalkbag, sunscreen. Those are all aid. Also, I wouldn't bother bringing a quicklink/mussy etc. because that's what you leaver biner is for. If you find an anchor in need of replacement you can just leave your biner and come back next time with a replacement and get your biner back.

I also bring a shoulder sling tied from tubular webbing to clip draws to when cleaning them. I find it to be a PITA to hand over draws to somebody else 1 by 1 and much easier with a sling. Plus, on the off chance that I need to bail off a tree then I don't have to cut up a sling or leave 5 draws chained together.

Your crag goat stepped on my rope. I pushed him outta the way and he head butted me!

Your crag goat pooped and you didn't pick it up, he ate my backpack and he's making all the crag babies cry and....well, you know x 15 more pages

I didn't see hammock and GoPro drone camera on your list!?

Seriously, though, your initial list is pretty spot on for what my crag pack looks like. I pare it down a bit if the approach is long or mega steep but otherwise I like have more than just the essentials.

I feel every crag pack should have an adjustable wrench and a couple screw links in it.
