Disertation - Questionaire
Hey guys, i am doing a dissertation on rock climbing and was wondering if you guy and girls would mind filling it out and spreading it amongst your clubs. Thank you very much. Feel free to post on here if you have any questions |
I started through, then realized you were using British trad grades, and even worse, were only using half of the trad-grade system, the adjectival without the technical. This is completely inappropriate, and essentially meaningless since these are commitment grades, for top-rope, sport, or bouldering. |
In addition, you also left out several forms of climbing to include aid/ bigwall, alpine, ice and mixed. Maybe you could combine alpine with trad and mixed with ice. However, you should at least provide options for aid and ice as those are favorites among plenty of climbers. |

Thank you. I will take this onboard and consider adding them into a later questionnaire. |

Glad to help you pilot your study. Knowing what I know about people, I'd suggest you have everyone use the grade system they are used to. Having us look it up in an unfamiliar table means we'll probably make mistakes in the translation. Perhaps you can have a combo box that lets us chose our system, then that changes the options in the next question to match what we are used to. (Then at the end, you can translate the grades to all be in the same system.) I tried very hard to do it correctly and took me a lot longer to do than I think many people will have patience for. |

The other problem is the British trad grade does not really translate easily to YDS. A conversion table exists, but it's not truly accurate because the British trad grade considers overall difficulty to include the route's risk, where as YDS does not. YDS is closer to the British technical grading scale, which only factors the hardest move similarly to YDS. So by asking what's the hardest you climb on YDS and British trad grade, you're really asking two different questions. |
