Mountain Project Logo

New MP logo is kinda bad?

I don't have a problem with the font (down with serifs!) or the gender of the person in the logo (seriously? That's a thing?), but I think it's kinda bad.

Mainly, the mountains and the climber don't really make sense together. The climber is about the size of the mountains, and seems to be sport climbing. She's on an overhang, wearing light weight clothing. Seems like the logo would make a lot more sense if the climber was mountaineering? Give her cold weather gear and some ice tools. The 'on an overhang' bit also looks weird with the mountain. The other project logos have someone doing something in front of the mountains (hiking/biking/running), presumably on a path. The climbing one has someone climbing, but on what? She doesn't seem to be climbing the mountain, so I'm left with the impression of 'climber on invisible wall in front of awkwardly placed mountain.' Eh.

Also, the climber is way off to the side in the logo, which feels weird in terms of white space balance. The hiking and trail running project logos look better in this regard, since the people's legs extend back towards the middle.

Maybe switch the climber to be standing on the ground geared up for a mountaineering expedition with an ice tool in her hand, looking towards the mountains? Maybe have her hanging from the blue part of the logo via her ice tools, so it looks like she's climbing something instead of hanging in the void? Seems like there's a better option somewhere...

This should get interesting....

This will probably devolve into stupidity like the other thread did, but ckersch's critique is pretty spot on. I liked the simple logo, I find this to be overly busy.

If they just took out the silly-looking climber and had the mountains and text, I'd actually really like the new logo. As is, the awkward falling climber is pretty strange...

I mostly agree with the OP. Other then the ice climbing/mountaineering portion. I would be interested to see the numbers but I highly doubt ice and mountaineering drive the site hits and ticks.

I agree with this post. Male or female, mountaineering or sports climbing... doesn't matter. Just get rid of the sport climber girl free solos and falls off a mountain!

Really? Three frickin' threads for this subject?

(EDIT: looks like the other one got nuked)

maybe they could make it so everyone picks their own icon and thats what they see. it could be a girl climbing or a dude falling or for the majority of us who dont care, it could be nothing....

I like the new logo.

I think it's fine. I wish they'd optimize the forum instead.

One thing no one is really mentioning, but it's worth pointing out:
The new logo was apparently designed mostly to fit with the other 'Project' sites. Check out the other logos, they're all the same style. Thought I'd mention it because it adds a modicum of reason to their otherwise strange design.

i think the main complaint is the climber silhouette looks awkward. A silhoutte like this may be fit better: nogravity.com.au/images/log…

But that's a really nit-picky complaint.

Being a designer....I'll bite.

The logo looks weird because the directional flow of the arms and the ponytail reflect falling....a strange design choice considering our content. And not being anchored to anything enhances this effect.

Maybe something like this:

anchor her

Now it looks like she's actually either climbing a severe overhang or cresting a bigger mountain's ridge line.

So the other "Project' logos are also bad?

I tried so hard not to bite and join in here, but the new logo is bad. I'm curious if there is any chance it gets changed.

We're working on it and we appreciate all of the constructive feedback. Stay tuned because we are definitely not the Free Solo Whipper Project ;)

Omg she is falling. That's a pretty epic fail.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
