Hey all! I have been itching for an excuse to head down to Peru and feel like pulling the trigger on some sub $700 tickets to Lima that I have found.. Does anybody have any opinions on Peru (backpacking, climbing, sight seeing, etc.) I'm curious to see what people think of it.

Thanks!

I have been and it was a great trip. The whole affair was super cheap. I wish we had spent more time in aguas calientes and cusco. Lima was cool but I prefer the other two places. Unfortunately my partner was not into the idea of the Inca Trail or outdoor activities.

Do you surf? Might be some of the best surf on the planet.

This is so stupid. Let's post all the violent attacks that happen in the ole USofA too and then justify living/traveling there.

I lived in Huaraz for a year and half. It's a beautiful place and THE place to go if you're a climber. I'd spend most of my time there, if I were you.

Oh, and total number of violent attacks in my time there: 0.

Was there this past summer. Bounced back and forth between Chicama (some of the best surf I've ever experienced) and Huaraz. Great inexpensive accommodations and food at both places. Huaraz has some pretty insane trekking to many different lakes and passes well over 15,000 ft. below many 20,000 ft + peaks complete with hanging glaciers and waterfalls. Out of the 12 countries I've been Peru was by far my favorite. Also, felt very safe and treated with nothing but utmost respect from every local we met over our 2 month visit.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
