I go to Sender One... they make you lead on your own rope and they sell 35m ones for the members. Those ropes need to stay inside, in your locker. When I go there they get the whole 60M pile of dirty, dusty nicked up cord... on a rope pad thats also dirty and nicked up. Nothing screams outside like a furry 60m cord. I hope the fallen climber heals up.
Ha ha, right?!?! I always go AT LEAST 37m, otherwise, really, are you a dummy? Oh man, 60m cord screams NOOOOB. If you are outside and not belaying with a 72-74m cord, get the F off the slab.

I still maintain that these kinds of mistakes happen to people that have been climbing for a long time and think they are above such simple mistakes (John Long not finishing a knot- perfect example) or from brand new climbers. The 7 years+ crowd and the <1. The 2-6 year level of experience seems to see the least preventable mistakes, but of course they still happen. Just less. IMO
Ya, though I find that the double overhand probably takes me around 20 seconds - and i am old! - it is SO important! I hate to say it, but I just found this website and I can't believe I didnt know about it.

I just love climbing. Been doing it since the late 70s. I'm sure you girls and guys are thinking this guy is old!

But guys, please be safe!! As the kids say #BelayAllDay

I was actually first on the scene at this accident. As I was climbing a route right next to them. I had spoken to them and they had asked me whether to rappel or lower what was common protocol. They were new to outdoor climbing and had a gym rope. I noticed that the Rope was not a familiar looking up to me but it never occurred to me that somebody would have a 40 meter rope. He skipped that draw on purpose because he was climbing too far in the chimney to clip it. There is however a limit to how much time you can spend helping othersat a place like the parking lot while because you'd spend your entire day teaching aclimbing. He was lucky that he was at the parking lot wall and that there were a lot of climbers around willing to help carry the litter. Because the rescue squad wanted to wait around for Park Service to help carry.

The real question lies in which tail of the distribution holds the most sway.

For different reason, but yes we are doomed.

(16 July 2016, California) Pokemon's unintended "Go Jump" mode is predicted to have a dwindling fan base. Two California men blindly followed app clues to a clue-less 75-to-100 foot cliff tumble in Encinitas on July 13. They both survived falling off the crumbling cliff--minor injuries only--missing a full DARWIN but marking themselves AT RISK. Speaking of mental laxity, this correspondent wonders what is wrong with the education system when investigators cannot figure out the height of a cliff.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
