Actually, this is the preferred descent. A much less sandy approach can be made by following the instructions on the main Woodfords Canyon page. Basically, follow your dotted line further up-canyon and then start up towards the group of large trees that sit below the Donnie-G wall. There's cairns to lead the way.

Interesting, Ryan. We found this route to be the best ascent and descent. Originally we did take the route you're suggesting for the ascent (following the dashed line then moving back right toward Donnie G as described on the main page). But it was looser, more circuitous, and less obvious. Plus we only saw a couple cairns and they weren't very helpful.

That said, based on your comment we may have passed a turn onto the route you're suggesting. Next time I head up there (unfortunately probably a while) I'll take a closer look and maybe do some cairn maintenance.

Approx approach path up the slope after the initial ~1/2 mile of flat travel parallel to the road from the parking area. The turn right up the slope is easy to miss. In general look for the large lone pine tree in the middle of the slope. The loose "path" goes to the left of this tree.
