Intercostal or abdominal injury

Does anyone have experience with a torn intercostal (or possibly abdominal) muscle? I took a significant fall and either hit the rock directly or hit a cam.

I thought my rib was broken but Xray said no. Dr. said bruised rib but I think torn muscle. Rib seems to protrude slightly at the end but it could just be the deterioration of the adjoining muscle. My upper right abdominal muscle has completely collapsed.

At first, I could not run but got slowly better over four weeks. I tried light climbing but then pushed it too far. I then helped move my wife's kayak and it seems like I tore it further. The last 2-3 weeks I have done very little but I do not seem to be recovering at all. I am now 7 weeks past fall.

Tried ibuprofen and then naproxen but I see them as helping with pain relief and not with healing.

Ideas?

Thanks.

Surprised the doc didn't mention it... could also be torn cartilage. Not sure where the impact was on the chest wall?
Costochondral injuries can take a long ass time to heal.
Good luck

Good call. Coincidentally, I just got back from the gym (only light weights, no climbing) and a doctor/climber said same thing. Intercostal cartilage.

Thanks.

Joe I did this pulling an overhang at full stretch several years ago. It SUCKS. It can be a persistent injury, but I'm a bit older and slower to heal than in the past-about 44 at that time.

Don't rush back. I also bought a back compression torso wrap and wore it when I climbed to hold the rib age in. Helped a lot. All is cool now. Took a few months for me. Seems good seven years out.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
