There is a device called the Rope Wrench that has been in use in tree climbing for four or five years now that is very similar to the Ohm. It also bends the rope to create friction but is attached to the harness directly above the friction hitch. This allows the climber to descend on a single rope which is nearly impossible with just a hitch alone. Recently the Wrench has been used to help lower branches and chunks of wood down, also.

Last I heard, should be for sale in November.

As a climber who is approximately 1.4 times heavier than my significant other/belayer I fully intend to buy this. Partially because it will maker her feel safer about belaying me but also because I know I'll be able to try harder when I don't have the fear of whipping and hurting her (less concerned about myself).

Spoke with Edelrid both at their German office and their North American Distribution Center. Should be able to get one of these off of Backcountry by December, but due to demand it is possible we will not actually have one of these in the US until January. Trying to get my friend in Munich to send me one at the moment.

Trust me, my partner/girlfriend is 65 lbs less than me. I want one too. Also found out they are not approved for trad, but if this works the way it says it does, I don't understand why I wouldn't always strap it on, and place gear so directional bias is not an issue.

I'm a fatty and it's really hard to find people to climb with. I'm dying to get my hands on one of these.
I would be interested to see how it would work with Trad. I don't see why it would be an issue.

Watching the video it clearly pulls upward. For trad your first placement would need to be a cam with the stem angled up. If you clip it on just this piece the weight of the ohm might rotate your cam out of position. To really use it well you would have to have a piece angled down and connect them with a clove on the sling, then clip the ohm on the lower piece which is angled upward. Sounds like a royal PITA.

That's probably why they don't advise it for Trad. I'm not a trad climber so I have no clue.

I'm the sorta light (130ish) belayer. My usual partners have only ranged up to around 160ish outside, so it's not been an issue. Inside, I just hook on to a weight bag, and have belayed folks much, much heavier (230?).

All that said, I do try to think about all of the circumstances the whole time I belay and I'm prepared to belay heavier guys outside, too.

Part of that could mean building an anchor at the start of the climb, which certainly would need to be multi directional. That seems like it could work with the ohm, and if it was what was needed anyway, why not try?

Your belayers probably have thought this through. If they haven't, they should have, for their own safety, also.

Where I expect this device to show up, is at gyms, especially those with programs for kids and teens. I don't see loads of individuals buying it, "just in case", probably just those who are already mismatched weight wise.

Just my two cents. Helen

Got my hands on one, will likely get to use it this weekend at gym.

I finally saw one in action this weekend. Leader told me that there is 'some' friction while leading, and especially when making a quick clip. Belayer told me that device works best when belayer stands far away from, and not under the first clip. I then saw her get dragged into the wall when catching a fall. I was hopeful about the OHM, but so far I'm not impressed.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
